Approach

updated Aug 2021

Approach

The port can be entered from the N or S. The port is approached from N through Ulvesund, max draught is 18.0m.

The port is approached from S through Maloysundet between the E side of Maaloy (61°55.7'N 005°07.5'E) and the mainland; a causeway joins the islet to Saeteneset, the SE point of Vagsoy. From S through main channel max draught 10.5m.

Port limits

A vessel is considered "arrived" upon docking, but the boundary is 1nm W of nearest land. The N boundary is 1nm N of Vaagsoy Island and the S boundary is the middle of Faafjord.

Traffic schemes and VTS

None.

Anchorages

Anchorage to be advised by pilot or Harbour Office.

Vessels of considerable size can anchor off the town of Maaloy, avoiding the prohibited area. The bottom is sand and mud or rock, depending on distance offshore. During S winds, there is good anchorage for smaller vessels in Deknepollen (61°55.8'N 005°08.4'E) where the bottom is mud, care being taken to avoid submarine cables close SE and an outfall pipeline which extends about 0.1nm W from near the fish oil factory.

Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is prohibited in the fairway E of the line joining Norde Maaloy Light to Goteberghamaren (61°56.5'N 005°08.0'E) a point on Vagsoy 0.6nm N, aand W of the line joining the N light on the E side of Maloysundet to Trolleboflu Light; it is also prohibited near the quays. Submarine cables which exist between Trolleboflu and Leistholmen Lights, and between Leistholmen and the W shore, must be avoided.

Restrictions

Bridge clearance: Maaloysundet is divided into two passages by a small islet, on which stands the central pillar of a bridge spanning it. The vertical clearance of the bridge is 42m over a width of 22.5m, or 40m over a width of 76m. The E passage has a depth of 7.0m and the vertical clearance is 41m over a width of 50m. Lights are exhibited on both sides of the bridge to indicate the centre of each passage.

Speed: Between Maaloysundet and Leistholmen, there is a speed limit of 6kts but larger vessels may proceed at 8kts to improve steering if wind and stream conditions make this speed necessary. In Maaloysundet itself, vessels may adjust speed as necessary for safe steering.

Tugs

Two tugs available, to be ordered from agent, stationed in Maaloy.

Mooring

Mooring information will be provided through the agent or direct from the Harbour Office.
