Approach

updated Aug 2023

Approach

Deepwater approach:

The deepwater approach to Lysekil, from a position 0.5nm SE of Brofjordens Angoring Lightbuoy, (58°15.0'N 011°13.0'E), leads ENE to a position 1nm ENE of Gaven Light, (58°16.0'N 011°21.0'E), then generally SE for 125nm to a position 0.125nm NW of Flatholmen Light, (58°15.8'N 011°25.0'E), then E towards the harbour.

Other approaches:

Lysekil can also be approached as follows:

From NW: From a position N of Svensholmen Light, (58°18.7'N 011°22.0'E), generally SE, maximum vessel draught 8.0m. This route forms part of the Archipelago Channel.

From W: From a position (58°16'N 011°18'E), generally E, maximum vessel draught 80m. This route should only be used in calm weather and with good visibility.

From SW: From a position 0.5nm NW of Bonden, (58°12.6'N 011°19.0'E), NE, maximum vessel draught 80m. This approach joins the deep-water approach also the approach from the W, in position 0.4nm SSW of Gaven Light. In hazy weather this route has the advantage of recommended anchorage to the E of Bonden.

From S: From a position close SW of Hattan, (58°10.5'N 011°22.5'E) generally NNE, maximum vessel draught 8.0m. This route also forms part of the Archipelago Channel.

Directions: Deep-water approach: Initial position, (58°14.7'N 011°14.2'E), 0.55nm SE of Brofjordens Angoring Lightbuoy.

Leading marks:

Front mark: N extremity of the islet Berggylteskar, (58°16.3'N 011°22.6'E).

Rear mark: Vallboroset 2.25nm ENE a light coloured hill with a cairn and mast on its summit.

The alignment (069°) of these marks leads ENE for approx 4nm, within a white sector, (053.5°-088°) of Gaven Light, (red lantern on a white tower with a black band, 9m in height), (58°16.0'N 011°21.0'E) for the first 3.25nm passing (with positions from Gaven Light):

NNW of a wreck with a charted depth of 11.0m, which lies within the white sector, 0.4nm WNW of Tovas Ungar (3.25nm SW), a group of rocks awash which are marked on their W side by a spar buoy (W cardinal), then;

SSE of a shoal with a least charted depth of 16.0m, (2.5nm) WSW, which lies within the white sector of the light, then;

SSE of Trillingesand (0.6nm WSW), which lies 0.2nm SSW of Trillingarna a group of islets and rocks and is marked at it's SE end by a spar buoy (port hand), then;

NNW of the shoal surrounding Sands badar, (0.55nm SSW) which has 2 heads with depths of 8.5m over them, then;

SSE of Gaven, a small islet on which stands Gaven Light above and on its SW extremity, a white beacon.

After passing Gaven Light the track is adjusted to fall within a sector (056.5°-059.5°) of Gulskaren Light, (white tower, 6m in height), (58°16.8'N 011°23.6'E) for approx 1nm, passing with positions from the light:

NNW of a detached 8.5m patch, (1.25nm SW), then;

SSE of a shoal with a least depth of 5.2m over it, (1nm WSW) which is marked on the SE side by a spar buoy, (port hand), then;

NNW, distance 0.1nm from Bergglyteskar, (0.7nm SW) and the bank extending 0.25nm SW from it, and;

SSE of a detached 85m patch, (0.7nm WSW).

When Gulskaren Light is at a distance of 0.45nm, the track alters gently towards the SE, then continues SE for 0.8nm, within a sector, (129°-138.5°) of Flatholmen Light, (white lantern), (58°15.8'N 011°25.0'E), passing, (with positions from Gulskaren Light):

SSW of a 4.7m patch, (300m S), which lies of the foul ground, extending 01nm S from the S islet of Gulskaren, then;

Close NE of a 11.9m rocky patch, (0.4nm S), which lies 0.25nm NNE of the N islet of Jamningarna and is within the white sector of Flatholmen Light. A spar buoy, (starboard hand), (0.55nm S), marks the edge of the shoal extending N from the islet, this buoy is moored 0.1nm S of the 11.9m rock, then;

SW of the foul ground fringing Skallholmen, (0.65nm SE), then;

NE of the shoal extending 0.25nm NE from the S islet of Jamningarna, (0.8nm S), which is marked at its NE end by a spar buoy, (starboard hand). A beacon, (white with a black band), stands on the islet, then;

SW of Stangebadan, (0.85nm SE) which is marked on its E extremity by a spar buoy, (starboard hand), then;

SW of the shoal extending 200m SW from Satngholmen, (1nm SE) on the E end of which stands Stangholmen Light, (white lantern).

When Flatholmen Light is at a distance of 300m the track leads E into Gullmarn and towards South Harbour passing S of Slaggabeden Light, (floodlit white tower on a grey base, 8m in height), (58°16.0'N 011°26.4'E) which stands on a reef on the S side of the entrance to Sodra hamnen. A rock with a depth of 2.0m or less over it, lies 1.25nm N of the light and as marked on its E side by a spar buoy (port hand).

The track into South Harbour leads N between Slaggabaden and Lysekil Redd Light, (white pedestal) 0.5nm ENE, which stands on Tova, an above water rock.

Controlling depth:

The deep-water track has a channel draught of 10.0m to the anchorages S of Lysekil and to the container berth. The channel draught is 9.0m into South Harbour and the main commercial berths.

Traffic schemes and VTS

A Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system, operated by Sodertalje, is located in the vicinity of the port. Information regarding traffic in the area and navigational details such as ice and passage limitations is provided by the Lysekil VTS Control. All vessels in the VTS area must maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Ch 11 and 16.

The VTS system is mandatory for the following:

1. Vessels with an LOA 45m and over.

2. Vessels 300GT and over.

3. Tows LOA 45m and over 45m.

4. All vessels of 20GT and over or LOA 15m and over.

5. Small fishing vessels if their activity could impair the safe passage of vessels transiting.

The VTS area limits are shown by a line joining the following positions:

updated Jul 2023

Where it is

Lysekil is situated on the NW side of the entrance to Gullmarnsfjorden, which extends 10nm NE, midway between Gothenburg and the Norway-Sweden Border. It is the most W'ly port in Sweden.

The port

Lysekil is a well-equipped commercial, fishing, passenger and recreational port located 70km NW of Gothenberg. The port consists of three commercial berths including the Groto Rev skaj Berth which can handle a range of services such as; RoRo, cruise, liquid, LNG, LPG, general and dry cargo. The port also has facilities for fishing, yachts and tugs and is part of the timetabled fast ferry line 847 to Skafto as well as the road ferry line 161 from Finnsbo to Skar.

The history of Lysekil dates back to the 16th century and it flourished with the herring trade. Hundreds of thousands of barrels of salted herring were exported every year from the port. During the second half of the 19th century however, quarrying became big business with Bohus granite being exported.
