Approach
updated Apr 2020Approach
The Livorno Habour Turning Basin has recently been deepened to 13m.
The S entrance is the main entrance to the port and has a navigable width of 0.12nm between the S end of Diga Curvilinea and shoal water extending from the coast E of it, with depths of up to 13.0m in the harbour.
The NE approach lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme leads into the S entrance. Pass between the S end of Diga Curvilinea and a light beacon (starboard hand) moored 2.25nm SE, keeping to the starboard side of the channel in accordance with port regulations, then turn sharply to a course of approx 000° and be guided by two light beacons, starboard hand, marking the E side of the channel which has 100m width. A depth of 12.3m can be carried through Avamporto to Bacino San Stefano and then to Darsena dei Petroli, but deep draught vessels must have regard to a 10.6m patch lying 0.2nm SSW of the S end of Diga Curvilinea.
The N entrance, lying between the head of Diga Marzocco and the E side of Diga Meloria, is 330m wide. There are 4.7m and 5.4m patches close within the entrance, and depths of 5.0m or less extend from the heads of both moles. Vessels approaching from N with a draught greater than 3.0m must pass W of Secche Della Meloria and enter through the S entrance.
Approach the N entrance with the tower on the summit of Monte Nero in line with the light structure on the N end of Diga Meloria bearing 143° which leads between Secche della Meloria and the coastal shoals. At night, pass 0.1nm E of the lightbuoy on the E side of Secche della Meloria. In passing through the N entrance, navigate with caution and keep as close to mid channel as is consistent with the port regulations.
Port limits
Port limits extend 3nm to seaward of the outer breakwaters.
Restrictions

Vessels using the S entrance must keep to the port side of the channel; if the entrance is occupied by a vessel leaving, a vessel arriving must wait until the entrance is clear.
Vessels entering Porto Mediceo must keep to the starboard side of the channel.
If the entrance to Porto Mediceo is occupied by a vessel arriving, vessels about to leave must wait until the entrance is clear.
Vessels leaving Porto Mediceo must give way to vessels leaving Bacino Cappellini.
