Approach

updated Aug 2010

Approach

The port is approached from the S and entered between the head of Diga di Levante on the E and the head of Diga de Antemurale on the W.

Caution: When approaching from the S, Diga Antemurale is very low and difficult to identify. A light is exhibited from a red tower 11m in height, standing at the E head of Antemurale.

Marine farms are situated near the heads of Diga di Levante and Diga de Antemurale. Vessels are not permitted to carry out any marine activity within 30m of these farms.

Directions: From a position S of the harbour entrance, the track leads N into the entrance. The channel has a depth of 8.0m.

San Giacomo Light is exhibited from a white round tower, 37m in height, standing at the root of Molo di Levante, and 0.5nm SE of Castel San Angelo.

The best marks are San Giacomo Lighthouse in line with the cupola of the church of San Angelo, bearing approx 349°. This line leads close W of the extended Diga di Levante. Diga di Levante is a curved breakwater, extending 1nm S on the W side of the mouth of Fiume Salso and protects the harbour entrance from silting. A light is exhibited from a green cylindrical tower 8m in height on the head of the breakwater.

A light is exhibited from a green column, 5m in height standing on a pedestal, situated at the head of Molo di Levante.

Caution: The harbour and outer harbour are subject to continuous silting and are periodically dredged. Masters should consult the port authority for the latest information.

Port limits

The port limits extend from the mouth of the Salso River to Ecnomo Hill, approx 0.8nm W.

Anchorages

There are 2 anchorages available as follows: 37°03.3'N 014°00.0'E, depth 20.0m and 37°04.0'N 013°50.0'E, depth 21.0m. The vessel's anchorage position is designated by the Port Authority with the help of the pilot.

Tugs

Available from Gela, on request from master.

From the breakwater to the commercial port there are some difficult manoeuvres. Vessels over 130m without a bow thruster will require the use of at least one tug.

Mooring

Vessels berth alongside the quay as per pilot's and port authority instructions.
