Syrian regulations require ships to approach Latakia on a course of 090° from a position 13nm W of the harbour entrance, keeping between the parallels of 35°30'N and 35°32'N.
The harbour is entered by passing close N of the main breakwater on the leading lights. The channel has a depth of 14.5m, capable of accommodating vessels with 13.3m draught in the New Port and 3.5m in the Old port.
Leading Lights: Front light (35°31.8'N 035°46.1'E).

SSW of a shoal (0.22nm NNE), with a depth of 7.2m over it. It is marked by a lightbuoy (port hand).
Once clear of the shoal leave the leading line and head SSE into the harbour.
Anchorages
The anchorage area extends W of the breakwater and N of Lat 35°30'N. In this area anchorage may be obtained 0.5nm off the breakwater, in depths of 15.0-20.0m, sand. This anchorage is open and should only be used temporarily, though the holding ground is good.
Prohibited anchorage: Passage is prohibited E of a line extending NNW from the head of the breakwater. Vessels navigating in this area are required to have a pilot onboard.
