Approach

updated Feb 2016

Approach

The basin extends 235m SE from Lahaina Light, and is 60m wide between the waterfront and a mole. It is approached from SW through a dredged channel. The entrance is some 20m wide and faces NW, which requires a 90° turn to starboard from the channel and may be affected by swell. Depths are reported to be 2.4m in the dredged channel, and from 1.5m to 3.0m in the basin.

Anchorages

A good anchorage may be found in the roadstead, in depths of 16-27.0m between 0.35nm and 0.6nm SW of Lahaina Light, on the N side of the basin approach. When approaching, vessels should keep about 1.0nm offshore until Lahaina Light bears 056° and then steer for the anchorage on this bearing. There is a special anchorage in depths of 2.0-7.0m between 0.15nm W and 0.3nm NW of Lahaina Light. In this anchorage vessels of less than 20m in length are not required to exhibit anchor lights.
