Approach
updated Nov 2020Approach
The port may be approached from within Kompong Som Bay, or from the S. Kompong Som Bay may be entered from the W via the channel between Kaoh Rung (10°43'N 103°15'E) and Kaoh Ta Team (2nm N); the channel between Kaoh Rung and Kaoh Rung Samloem (2.4nm SSE) may be used, but it is rocky and unsuitable for anchoring. From S, the channels between Kaoh Rung Samloen and Kaoh Kaong Kang and between Kaoh Kaong Kang and Kaoh Poah are clear of dangers.
Kompong Som is generally approached from S, and entered via Deep Passage (10°36'N 103°29'E), or, if making for a berth N of Kaoh Poah, approached via the channel between Kaoh Kaong Kang and Kaoh Dek Koul, and entered via North Passage.
South Channel: Extends from SV Buoy to Berth No 3 between Koh Pos and shore line with smallest depth of 8.2m. Marked by seven buoys and two leading alignments, Loune alignment (31°35') and Airfield alignment (189°).
North Channel: Lighted by 2 buoys - 'A' Buoy (white light) and 'B' Buoy (green light) on starboard side. Minimum depth of 7.0m, near 'B' Buoy. The channel leads to the inner anchorage and is reserved for small draught vessels.
Tanker Channel: Has a natural depth of 11.0-13.0m and is reserved for all tankers. It leads to the pier, CBM (Conventional Buoy Moorings) and the new tanker terminal.
Caution: Local knowledge is required when proceeding to the head of Kompong Som Bay as there are numerous fishing stakes inshore of the 10m depth contour.
Anchorages
There are three entry anchorages and one waiting anchorage inside the port area for deeper draught vessels.
Tugs
There are 5 tugs in use, 2 of which are single screw tugs of 800hp, 3 others are twin screw of 1,600hp and 1,800hp. Tugs join vessels at the berth, preferably ship's line is used. For vessels with pitch control it is recommended to use tug's line. At least one tug is required for berthing.
