Approach

updated Feb 2017

Approach

The harbour is approached from Kalsoyarfjorour through the Pollurin or Klaks-Red (62°15.0'N 006°37.0'W), the land locked area of water between the S side of Kunoy and the coast of Bordoy S and SE. The main entrance is from the NW between Kunoy and Klakkur. The harbour is the safest in the Faeroe Islands. The route from both N and S is deep and clearly marked.

Directions for entering harbour: Pollurin: From a position in Kalsoyarfjordur abreast Kalsoy Light, the route through Pollurin to a leading line into Klaksvik leads E passing between Klaks and the S side of Kunoy, both of which are fringed by a narrow bank.

At night a white sector (256-269°), astern, of Kalsoy Light leads through Pollurin.

Klaksvik Leading Lights: Front light (grey metal column) extending from W side of Klaksvik.

Rear light (similar structure) (0.1nm S of front light) near middle of pier extending from W side of Klaksvik.

The alignment (170°) of these lights leads in mid-channel through the entrance and outer part of Klaksvik.

Port limits

The N limit of the harbour is defined by a line joining two stone beacons, one on each side of the entrance to the inlet at Oduklettur and Kluftin.

Anchorages

There is excellent anchorage with a firm sea bed and depth of 35-45m on the sheltered Pollurin (Roads), in the lee of Kunoy island. Distance from the harbour is 800m.
