Approach

updated May 2010

Approach

The route to Port Kherson leads in a generally E direction by way of the Bugsko Dneprovsko Limaniskiy Kanal for about 18nm to the vicinity of position 46°36'N 031°48'E and then, for a further 2.5nm, by way of the Khersonskiy Morskoy Kanal to the mouth of the Rika Rvach, the N arm of the estuary of the Rika Dnipro. The part of the Bugsko Dneprovsko Limaniskiy Kanal which forms the first part of this route, consists of five reaches and the Khersonskiy Morskoy Kanal of three reaches.

The route is marked by lights, river and spar buoys and by lightbeacons and leading lightbeacons.

Rika Rvach: Is entered between two embankments. The N embankment, the end of which is in ruins, is shorter than the S embankment. Lights (metal columns, height 7m) are exhibited from the base of each embankment. A lightbuoy (port hand) lies 10m S of the head of the N embankment.

From the entrance the fairway follows the middle of the river for about 2nm and then follows Leading Lines Nos 12 to 9, which are marked by the alignment of light beacons (metal columns). In those places where the fairway departs from the centre of the river, floating navigational aids have been established.

Rika Dnipro and Rika Ol'khovyy Dnipro: The fairway in this section of the river first follows Leading Lines Nos 8 and 7 which lead down a wide and deep part of the main river. The fairway then follows Leading Line Nos 6 to 2 by way of Rika Ol'khovyy Dnipro until it rejoins the main river at the NE end of Ostriv Velykyy Pot'omkins'kyy. The fairway finally follows Leading Line No 1 to Port Kherson.

All leading lines are marked by the alignment of light beacons.

Caution: Particular care must be taken when navigating in an area between the entrance to Rika Koshova (46°37'N 032°37'E) and No 10 Quay, 0.9nm upstream.

Port limits

The W, or seaward limit of the port, is formed by a line joining Seleniye Geroyskoye (46°31'N 031°53'E) with the extremity of Mys Adzhigol'skaya Kosa, 6.5nm NW.

Khersonskiy Reyd consists of that part of the Reka Dnepr between the N suburbs of the town and Ostrov Malyy Potemkin (46°36'N 032°34'E).

Anchorages

Foreign vessels anchor between Areas No 614 and 615 in depths of 8.0-13.0m. Dry cargo vessels anchor between Area No 614 and No 120 Lightbuoy (1nm SW) in depths of 6.0-9.0m. Tankers anchor between No 111 Lightbuoy and Ostriv Malyy Pot'omkins'kyy (1.3nm ENE) in depths of 10.0-11.0m.

Restrictions

Vessels having a draught exceeding 5.0m are restricted to 10kts when navigating the approach channel.

Mooring of large vessels may not take place when the wind strength exceeds 27kts.

Bugsko Dneprovsko Limanskiy Kanal: Summer: vessels greater than 170m LOA and 8.0m draught may only navigate during daylight hours and when visibility is not less than 2nm.

Winter: vessels with a draught more than 5.0m may only navigate at night if there is no ice present and the leading lights are visible at distances of 5-10nm.

Entry to the canals is prohibited during conditions of poor visibility and when winds exceed 29kts. When such conditions occur, vessels in the channel must proceed to the nearest safe anchorage.
