updated Aug 2019

Approach

The main approach to Kavieng Harbour is via Steffen Strait and Nusa Channel and then through the S entrance (02°37'S 150°46'E) to the harbour. The deep water approach depths are 18.0 - 27.0m, due to coral growth.

Anchorages

The harbour has ample room for anchoring at the S end but the N end is restricted.

Prohibited anchorage: A submarine cable is laid NE across the main channel from the SE extremity of Nago Island and anchoring in its vicinity is prohibited.

Quarantine anchorage: Quarantine anchorage lies 0.5nm SW of East Reef Light beacon in a depth of approx 18.0m.

Other anchorages are (positions relative to Main Wharf):

In a depth of 18.0m (0.15nm W).

In depths of 13.0 -15.0m (0.37nm NNW), sand and coral with limited swinging room. The channel in the vicinity of this anchorage is narrowed to approx 0.2nm by reefs and shoal water extending from both sides.

Restrictions

The approach channel is to be entered during daylight only due to the presence of off lying reefs and islands. Swinging manoeuvres in the harbour area are only safely carried out by vessels under LOA 150m of less than 5,000DWT.
