Approach

updated Aug 2020

Approach

The port is approached via an entrance channel 4.5m in depth.

Approaching Teluk Sumenaep from W or SW proceed through the channel known as South Western Channel S of Gili Gilingan, passing either side of Karang Gunter, and then W and N of Pulau Genteng.

From S or SE use the channel known as South Eastern Channel, which leads between Pulau Genteng and Karang Van den Berg, then E of Takat Gemer, or between that reef and the island. A prominent clump of trees NW of Tanjung Tanjung in line with the NE side of the sand patch on Takat Noko, bearing 312°, leads through the latter passage. From SE pass Gili Lawak, and then S of Pulau Puteran. The coast of the latter is fairly steep to.

When the leading light structures, the front a white metal framework tower, 8.0m in height, situated 200m S of the salt factory at Kalianget, and the rear, a similar tower, 13m in height, close NNE of the front light tower, are in line bearing 029°, steer for them. These light structures in line lead across the bar in a depth of 2.7m. It should be noted that the rear light structure is obscured by trees when bearing 255°, and the front leading light structure by Tanjung Talangu, situated 1.25nm NNW of Tanjung Padike.

When over the bar, course should be adjusted to steer approx 056° on the light exhibited from the SW end of the quay at Kalianget, passing close NW of a green conical buoy moored 0.9nm SSW of the salt factory. Light draught vessels may then proceed alongside the quay, or may moor at the buoy. It is inadvisable to anchor here owing to confined space, shelving bottom and strong tidal streams.

Lights in line astern, bearing 250°, lead into the shallow bay on the N side of Pulau Puteran which is entered between Tanjung Sarotak (07°07'S 114°04'E) and Tanjung Lapa, 8.25nm NNE. From approx 0.5nm ENE of these lights the fairway is marked by numbered buoys.

Port limits

Kalianget comprises Teluk Sumenep and the area S enclosed by the N coast of Pulau Genteng and lines drawn from the NW and NE extremities of that island to Tanjung Tanjung and Tanjung Padike (07°05'S 113°56'E).

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained during the NW monsoon by small vessels in a depth of 7.0m, mud, 0.75nm NW of Tanjung Tanjung or 2nm N of the same point in a depth of 5.0m. If there is too much sea at the former berth, anchorage may be obtained 1nm S of Takat Gemer.

During the SE monsoon anchorage may be obtained off Aenganyar.
