Approach
updated Sep 2018Approach
Igoumenitsis Bay is approached between Akra Gonia (39°29.6'N 020°12.8'E) and Akra Vatatsa (approx 3.0nm NW).
The dredged entrance channel across the bar between Nisis Ayios Dhionisios (39°29.7'N 020°12.8'E) and Akra Dhrepanon (approx 0.8nm NNE) is marked by 4 pairs of lightbuoys. The direction of the axis of the channel is middle of the channel with a length of 1.0nm and 170m in width. The depth of the channel is 10.5m with a passage speed of 11kts.
Traffic schemes and VTS
Vessels must inform the VTS of Igoumenitsa (VHF Ch 14) prior to all movements for further instructions.
Igoumenitsa VTS co-ordinates sea traffic in Ormos Igoumenitsas through a narrow dredged channel with the W limit being a line drawn between the entrance of Thiamis Potamoi (Kalamas) (39°32'N 020°08'E) and Vrakhos Xeronisi (39°27'N 020°12'E). This area is sector 2 of Kerkira VTS.
All vessels intending to navigate through the dredged channel should also send a position report to Igoumenitsa Traffic on VHF Ch 14, 10 minutes prior to entering the channel to receive instructions and permission for the passage. Vessels leaving the port should report to Igoumenitsa Traffic on Ch 14, 5 minutes before departure.
Anchorages
Anchorage can be found 0.15nm NW of Pierhead Light in depths of 16.0-26.0m, mud. A good protected anchorage can also be found in the Gulf of Plataria.
Restrictions
Vessels moving in opposite directions may not use the dredged channel at the same time. Outbound vessels have priority over inbound vessels in the entrance channel.
Should an inbound vessel be waiting to use the entrance channel, then it must maintain a distance of at least 800m from the most seaward buoys marking the channel, and to the S of the axis of the channel, until the outbound vessel is seaward of the channel.
Vessels must establish and maintain radio contact from a distance of 1nm WSW of the entrance channel.
Tugs
2 Tugs ''Thiella" and "Megalohari 12'', also 1 launch ''Vasillios-Maria''.
Mooring
Stevedores available for vessels berthing.
