Approach
updated May 2010Approach
Vessels approach Horten from the main channel of Oslofjorden or from W of Bastoy.
Vessels proceeding through Oslofjorden should stay in the appropriate lane of the traffic separation scheme.
Channel W of Bastoy: From a position E of Slagenstangen Lightbuoy (red, 0.3nm ENE of Slagenstangen), vessels should steer to pass W of Skjergrunnen and Ostenskjaer and E of Ostre Smaskjaer and Piesen Banken. Borre Church (59°23'N 010°28'E), bearing 314° and open SW of Ostenskjaer, leads close SW of Skjergrunnen.
Then enter Bastoyrenna with Slagenstangen (59°18.9'N 010°32.2'E), astern, bearing 165° and open W of Steinboen. When abreast the W extremity of Bastoy, vessels should alter course NE to bring Ostenskjaer into line with Slagenstangen, bearing 167°, which leads W of Bastoybaen. Keep on this alignment until Revlingkalven (59°23.6'N 010°38.7'E) bears 091° and is well open N of Bastoykalven, when course should be altered towards an anchorage.
At night, the white sector of Ostenskjaer Light, bearing between 318.5°-341°, leads vessels between Slagenstangen Lightbuoy and Mefjordbaen (1.75nm NE of Slagenstangen) to within 0.7nm of the light. From a position 0.3nm W of Ostenskjaer, the white sector of Horten Light, bearing between 357°-010°, leads vessels through the fairway of Bastoyrenna to an anchorage off Horten.
If making for the anchorage on Vealosflaket, continue N and take care to avoid Hortenskrakken.
At night, the white sector of Horten Light, bearing between 273°-322°, leads towards Fylingen from the main channel.
