Approach

updated Oct 2018

Approach

Entrance channel has 2,200m length, 35m width and a dredged depth of 5.0m which is marked by buoys.

Directions for entering harbour: From a position approx 2.5nm NNE of Heiligenhafen Light (red tower, platform, white lantern, red and white dwelling, 13m in height) (54°22.0'N 011°01.0'E), in the W approaches to Fehmarnsund-brucke, the track leads SW in the white sector (206°-212.25°) of the light, passing (positioned from the light):

WNW of a 4.3m shoal (2.0nm NNE), at the W extremity of Grossenbroder Steinriff, and ESE of a 4.5m shoal (2nm NNE), then ESE of a 1.2m shoal (0.9nm NNE), at the E extremity of Warderhaken, the E part of the coastal bank off Graswarder, marked by a lightbuoy (E cardinal).

Leading lights: Front light (white triangle, point up, red border on white mast, 11m in height) (54°22.4'N 010°59.6'E), midway along the E breakwater.

Rear light (white triangle, point down, red border, on grey warehouse, 15m in height) (300m further W).

The alignment (268.5°) of these lights leads W from close S of Heiligenhafen No 1 Lightbuoy (starboard hand) through the dredged channel, approx 40m in width, marked by pairs of buoys (lateral) for approx 0.5nm.

Warder Leading Lights: Front light (white triangle, point up, red border, on white mast, 14m in height) (54°22.6'N 010°59.1'E).

Rear light (white triangle, point down, red border, on white mast, 16m in height) (195m further W).

The alignment (279.2°) of these lights leads W from the vicinity of the shipyard at Warteburg and the small harbour at Ortmuhle, through a continuation of the buoyed channel as far as the E breakwater, when the track either leads SW into the outer harbour, or continues W through the entrance of Heilingenhafen Municipal pleasure craft harbour.

Traffic schemes and VTS

Inbound vessels, over 8m beam, must report at least 20 mins before arrival at Heiligenhafen No 1 Lightbuoy (starboard hand) at the seaward end of the channel on VHF.

Anchorages

Outer anchorage: Heilingenhafen Reede affords good anchorage. The best berth being in a depth of approx 7.0m with Heiligenhafen Light (54°22.0'N 011°01.0E) bearing 220° distant approx 0.5nm.

Smaller vessels can anchor nearer to the entrance of the dredged channel, where there is more shelter, but clear of the leading line within the channel.

Restrictions

Submarine pipeline: A pipeline extends approx 1nm NE from a position 0.25nm E of Heiligenhafen Light (54°22.0'N 011°01.0'E). There is a depth of 8.2m at the outer end of the pipeline.

About Heiligenhafen

updated Oct 2018

Where it is

Heiligenhafen is situated on Germany's Baltic coast approx 50km directly E of Kiel.

The port

The port, which has a small well protected harbour, handles general cargo and dry bulk

The outer harbour is protected from E by a breakwater, 380m in length, extending NNE and N from the shore. Its N extremity is floodlit.

The inner harbour lies W of the outer harbour, and is protected on its N side by a quay, 60m in width, which forms the S side of the large yacht harbour further NW.

From the head of the N quay, a mole extends E for approx 150m, and a short spur extends SE, separating the inner and outer harbours.

Two harbours exist, one for commercial and fishing vessels use, the other for yachts only.
