Approach

updated Sep 2024

Approach

The port may be approached from a general NE direction as required by draught. From a position 14nm ENE of Hay Point Light the recommended track, with min depth 13.1m LAT, leads WSW towards Hay Point. The course may then be directed as required to the assigned anchorage or pilot boarding place.

DBCT: The swing basin off Berth Nos 1, 2, 3 and 4 is 390m in length, 60m wide and 13.1m deep. Bottom is mud and silt.

HPCT: The dredged basin is 343m in length; width 61m; depth 16.6m. Bottom is mud and silt.

A departure channel has been established with a design depth of 14.7m at LAT which extends approximately 6.2 miles from the berths.

The departure channel is marked by a lighted Port Hand Beacon FL R 4s and Racon (Q) in position 21°14.9'S 149°24.7'E, a lighted Port Lantern Mark Beacon Fl R 4s in position 21°15.9'S 149°20.8'E and a lighted Starboard Lateral Mark Beacon Fl G 4s in position 21°15.7'S 149°20.7'E. Deep draught vessels are advised to keep to the centre of the channel on departure.

Port limits

The port of Hay Point consists of the area covered by waters, including tidal waters, of the sea, or waters connecting with the sea, within the following boundary - starting at the high water mark at the southern extremity of the N head of Bakers Creek entrance, then generally NE'ly along the geodesic to 21°10.76'S 149°17.73'E, then generally NE'ly along the geodesic to 21°09.91'S 149°20.06'E, then E along the parallel to 21°09.91'S 149°30.06'E, then S along the meridian to 21°17.91'S 149°30.06'E, then W along the parallel to the intersection of the high water mark on the mainland with latitude 21°17.91'S, then generally N'ly along the high water mark on the mainland to the starting point.

The port limits also include all navigable waters of rivers and creeks flowing directly or indirectly into waters within the boundary.

Dalrymple Bay Anchorage Sites Coordinates (WGS84)

Restrictions

The maximum allowable speed of approach onto berth is 1.3m/min.

Anchoring is prohibited in the restricted areas shown on Chart AUS 249.

Tugs

A separated tug harbour is located 1nm S of Hay Point at Highwater Island.

DBCT: Owns and operates Daltug Pty Ltd. which proves tug and line launch services. There are also 2 x 55t bollard pull tugs and 2 line handling launches available on Berth Nos 1, 2 and 3.

HPCT: Use Teekay Shipping to provide tugs and line services to vessels at their terminal. There are 2 x 70t bollard pull tugs and 2 line handling launches available on Berth Nos 1 and 2.

Usually vessel movements require a minimum of two tugs. Each terminal coordinates their own tug movements. Arrangements should be made via ship's agents.

Mooring

DBCL: All mooring lines are to be provided by the vessel. These must be in good condition and have a 3m tail of light rope spliced into the eye to facilitate transfer from the line boat to the dolphin. Wire rope mooring lines may only be used as springs and must have a least 17m of synthetic mooring rope attached to the end and be finished with a standard eye for securing to the slip hooks.
