Hirono is situated in Fukushima Prefecture facing the Pacific Coast, 36km NE from Onahama.
The port
Hirono consist of thermal power station facilities with total output of 4,4000MW, of which Unit 01 - 04 run on heavy crude oil and Unit 05 - 06 are coal fired. A new integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) unit with 540MW capacity has been constructed and started operation in year 2021. Coal imported from Australia and other countries to Onahama port are then transported to Hirono Thermal Power Station by coastal bulk carriers and coal ash used for recycling materials are exported from the facilities.
