Approach

updated Dec 2025

Approach

The port approach is 4nm wide, free from obstructions and depths vary from 40-80m all the way to the roadstead. The N part of the port of Harnosand is approached through Stora Inlopp and entered between Murbergsudden (62°39.2'N 017°56.1'E) on the mainland and Harnosands Hamn Light standing on the N end of Harnon.

Vessels bound for the S part of the port enter through Sodrasundet.

The maximum authorised draught in the fairway from N of Harnon to Djuphamnen is 7.7m.

The N and S harbours of Harnosand are linked by a waterway which is divided into two canals in its S part by the island of Mellanholmen. The two canals are named Vastra Kanalen and Ostra Kanalen. There are bascule bridges across both waterways, see restrictions. Ostra Kanalen is only suitable for small boats.

Anchorages

The roadstead N of the town has depths of 14-45m, bottom clay. Vessels must anchor SW of the peninsula of Vagnon (62°39.7'N 017°58.5'E), having regard to a power cable crossing the sound 0.2nm S of Oljekajen (62°38.7'N 17°56.6'E).

An anchorage, Area D, is established in the outer part of Alandsfjarden (62°40.3'N 17°52.0'E) centred on position 62°40.0'N 017°55.5'E.

Prohibited anchorage: Anchoring is prohibited within 0.05nm either side of an outfall pipe, which extends out from a purification plant, situated 0.5nm S of Harnosand harbour, on the W shore of the island of Harnon; its direction is marked ashore.

Restrictions

Government icebreakers keep the port open from Jan-Mar/Apr.

Bridges: The N part of the waterway is spanned by Nybron, a bascule bridge, with a vertical clearance of 4.0m when closed and navigable width of 8.0m.

Vastra Kanalen is also spanned by a bascule bridge with a vertical clearance of 2.5m when closed and navigable width of 11.5m.

Ostra Kanalen is spanned by two fixed bridges in the N part, both having a vertical clearance of 3.7m, and in the S part by a fixed bridge having a clearance of 1.0m. The N-most bridge in Ostra Kanalen has a navigable width of 17m; the S bridge a width of 8m.

Traffic signals are exhibited as follows:

Fixed red light indicates canal is closed.

Fixed green light indicates canal is open.

Bascule bridges will be opened daily from May-Oct between 0900 and 1100hrs and between 1800 and 2000hrs. At other times a request must be made to the harbour master.
