Approach

updated Apr 2020

Approach

The main approach from the North Sea is made by channels leading inward from Zeegat van Terschelling (53°20'N 005°05'E); a secondary approach is provided by channels leading inward from Zeegat van Texel (52°59'N 004°44'E). The harbour is entered between moleheads. Depths in the navigational channel are maintained at 7.0m by dredging.

The bottom in the tidal harbours consists of soft mud and vessels may lie aground without risk.

Anchorages

Outer Anchorage: Temporary anchorage can be found for vessels of appropriate size in the roads at the S end of Kimstergat, not more than 0.5nm N of the harbour entrance; larger vessels should anchor in Vliestroom.

Restrictions

Navigation Locks: Tjerk Hiddessluizen (0.5nm NE of Harlingen Rear Leading Light) gives access to Van Harinxmakanaal. The larger of two navigation locks is 127.5m long, 12m wide and with a depth of 3.1m below MLLWS (4.4m below NAP) over the outer sill. A road bridge, vertical clearance 5.7m when closed, spans the W end of the locks; communication with lock keeper by VHF radio.

The lock between Voorhaven and Oude Buitenhaven has a navigable width of 16m and a depth over sill of 3.25m below CD.
