Approach

Approach: The harbour is approached from the W side of Galtfjarden through an inlet, 2nm long, which can be entered passing N of Kalsholmen.

Former deep channel with allowed draught of 10.4m was closed in 1992 when shipments of iron ore were stopped as the mine, Dannemora Gruvor, was closed down. The deep channel can easily be reopened if required.

One channel suitable for ocean going vessels leads from the NW part of Singofjarden into Galtfjarden through which lie the approaches to Hallstavik and Hargshamn with depth of 11m.

For vessels of less than 6.7m draught, the route N of the Kalsholmen may be continued N of Granosund Lightbuoy, but S of the lightbuoy (starboard hand), moored 0.1nm SE of the S point of Granon, to rejoin the main 9.0m fairway 0.25nm NW.

Hargshamn Leading Lights (60°10.2'N., 018°28.8'E) in line bearing 270°, shown when required, lead to the New Quay installations 0.15nm WNW of the Ore Quay.

Entering the harbour: From a position 0.5nm E of Kalsholmen Light, the route leads WNW, passing:

NNE of the islet of Kalsholmen, marked on its N side by buoys (port hand), between Granosund Lightbuoy (isolated danger, 0.3nm WNW and a buoy (starboard hand), lying off the SE point of Granon (60°10'N., 018°31'EW), then, between buoys (lateral 0.5nm WNW) marking the N and S side of Langoskar and Granon respectively, keeping within the white sector (112°-114.5°) of Kalsholmen Light astern. Then to a position 0.2nm SSE of a buoy (starboard hand), 1.75nm WNW marking the S end of the shoal water off Glotan Island.

From the position 0.2nm SSE of the buoy (starboard hand) marking the S end of the shoal water off Glotan Island, the alignment (270°) of these lights leads to the New Quay berths 0.15nm WNW of the Ore Quay.

Traffic schemes and VTS

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained in the basin SW of Glotan Island, off Hargshamn (60°10'N., 018°29'E) in depths of 6.5m to 12.0m, soft mud.

Tugs

There are 2 tugs available, "Frigga" 1,750hp and "Hallsta 111" 230hp.

Mooring

At night vessels with a max LOA 150m, beam 20m and draught 7m are only permitted.

The port

The Port of Hargshamn, steeped in history since the 1600s, has long been a significant hub for maritime trade in Sweden. Originally established for the exportation of bar iron from the nearby Dannemora mines, the port played a crucial role in the iron ore industry until the mines were closed in 1992. After a brief reopening in 2012, the mines faced another closure in 2015 due to bankruptcy, marking a significant shift in the port's operational focus.

In its current capacity, Hargshamn primarily handles dry and bulk cargo. The port’s diverse cargo offerings include scrap metal, grain, wood chips, bark, pellets, fuel wood, baled waste, house modules, pumice, and various construction materials such as sheet piling and girders.

A notable feature of the port is its Ro-Ro berth, which is equipped with four fixed railway tracks, facilitating efficient transport and logistics. To ensure year-round accessibility, the port is maintained through the winter months by an icebreaker, operating from early January until late March or early April, depending on ice conditions.

Additionally, Hargshamn is recognised for having the largest storage capacity for wood pellets in Sweden, positioning it as a leader in the renewable energy sector.
