Approach

Harbour Grace is divided into inner and outer harbours by the bar, 1.5nm within the entrance.

To enter the inner harbour vessels should steer with Harbour Grace light tower in line with Ship Head light tower, this leads through a channel between the NW extremity of the bar and a coastal bank on the NW side of the harbour, marked on the SE by "CG3" Lightbuoy (porthand) and on the NW by "CG4" Buoy (starboard hand). When Long Harry Rock 22m in height situated 1.75nm NE of Point of Beach, is in line with the extremity of the land NE of it, vessels should alter course to 220° keeping the marks in line, astern. This leads into the inner harbour in a least depth of 6.7m S of "CG6" Buoy (starboard hand) moored on the edge of the coastal bank 0.2nm NE of Point of Beach.

In heavy weather the sea breaks on a boulder bank at the SE end of the bar. The buoys which are replaced by spar buoys in winter cannot be relied upon.

Anchorages

Anchorage is available in depths from 9-16m in the inner part of Harbour Grace.

Restrictions

A submarine cable is laid across the harbour from Point of Beach to the S shore. Two other cables are landed at Point of Beach from a seaward direction.

Harbour Grace is situated on the E coast of Newfoundland with the harbour being entered between Old Sow Point and Feather Point, on the NW shore in the vicinity of Point of Beach.

The harbour extends 7km in a SW direction with hills on either side.

There is a large fish freezing and distribution centre in the port plus dry cargo wharfage. The port is administered by the Ministry of Transport and has year round navigation with the harbour seldom freezing over.
