Approach

updated Jan 2017

Approach

From seaward Harbour Breton is entered between Western Head (47°27'N 055°49'W), 1.5nm ESE. Attention is drawn to several shoal patches off the entrance on which the sea breaks in bad weather.

The track then leads N for about 2nm, passing E of Rocky Point (47°28.8'N 055°47°6'W), from which a light (white round tower, red bands 6m in height) is exhibited, then W and SW passing between The Knob (47°29.2'N 055°48.1'W) and Harbour Rock, 0.15nm S into Southwest Arm. Harbour Rock is marked on its N side by "VB1" Lightbuoy (port hand).

Care should be taken when approaching Southwest Arm to avoid a shallow bank which extends about 0.1nm off Rocky Point.

Anchorages

Anchorage can be obtained off Southwest Arm approx 0.2nm NNE of Harbour Rock, in a depth of 31m, the depths increase rapidly E. It is advisable to use a good scope of cable to avoid dragging in heavy squalls which are liable to occur during fresh or strong winds especially in summer.

Small vessels can anchor in Southwest Arm in depths from 5.0m to 24m, to within 0.075nm of the bridge.

Mooring

There are numerous mooring buoys for the use of fishing vessels in Southwest Arm.
