About Hanko

updated Nov 2023

Where it is

Hanko, the southern most port of Finland, is situated on the SW coast, approx 150km SW of Helsinki.

The port

Hanko is located at the southernmost point of Finland and is made up of two harbours; Outer Harbour and Western Harbour. It is one of the leading ports in fast liner traffic and remains open throughout the year with the assistance of State icebreakers. The port is the closest Finnish port to continental Europe and is able to handle RoRo, PCC and general cargo vessels. Cargo handled throughout the port includes paper exports, forest product exports, car imports, container traffic, livestock, steel products and project cargo.

The port has a rich history due to the fact that the operations at the Western Harbour began in 1873. Butter was a major export to Copenhagen and England during the 1880's and 1890's including 15.3t being exported alone in 1905. Since the ports inception it has continued to grow and has been importing vehicles since the 1950's. The port had previous passenger ferry routes including one to Nynashamn, however these have since been discontinued. In 2020 the port was granted the Finnish Hyva YVA -award for best environmental impact assessment work and has Freeport status, through Freeport of Finland Ltd.

Traffic

Approx 4,900,000t of cargo, 57,000TEU and 1,927 passengers handled annually.
