Approach

updated Oct 2017

Approach

The W channel is suitable for vessels up to 7.0m. When 0.6nm E of Karsholmen (60°09.7'N 018°32.2'E) alter course SW and then S to pass W of the island of Ormon (60°09'N 018°33'E). Initially steer SW, passing N of Ormogrund Lightbuoy (60°09'N 018°33'E), for approx 0.5nm. Then alter course to 206° keeping ahead:

Ormosundet Norra Light (white lantern, green band, floodlit; elevation 4.0m) on the mainland 0.6nm S of Kalsholmen Light structure. Then steer S and SSE following the channel through Ormosundet which leads between Ormon Light, (white framework tower, red band, floodlit; elevation 3m) situated on the E side of the channel, on the SW extremity of Ormon and Ormosundet Sodra Light, (white lantern, green band, floodlit; elevation 2m) situated on the W side of the channel, 0.5nm SSE of Ormosundet N Light. Alter course to approx 134° round Ormosundshallan Light, (white pedestal, red band, floodlit; elevation 2m on a rock), on the E side of the channel, 0.25nm S of Ormon Light.

Ormosundet Lightbuoy, (red and black; light quick flashing), moored 0.3nm SE of Ormosundshallan Light structure, may be passed on either side. Hold this course for 1nm until Guldholmen Light (60°08'N 018°34'E), (white pedestal, elevation 4.0m on the W shore) 1nm SSE of Ormon, is abeam to starboard. Thereafter alter course as necessary to follow the remainder of the channel which leads S for a distance of 4.5nm to Hallstavik.

Entering the harbour:

Stromsviken Leading Lights: Front light (white triangle, point upwards on white pedestal 6.0m in height, (60°06.5'N 018°35.0'E)). Rear light (white triangle point upwards on grey framework tower, 12m in height), 0.7nm N of the front light.

From a position approx 1.0nm SSE of Stromsviken Rear Light, the alignment (354.5°) astern of these light leads for approx 2nm to the harbour entrance, passing: E of a buoy (starboard hand, 1.24nm S) marking the E side of a rock, then, W of Vlandvik Light (white lantern, 4m in height, 1.5nm SSE), then, W of a buoy (port hand, 1.75nm SSE) close S of Vandvik Light. On the W side of the channel, several rocks, several dolphins, lightbuoys and buoys line the edge of the channel.

Anchorages

Available depending on the weather, pilots will advise.

Restrictions

Vessels larger than 150m and all tankers navigate in daylight only. Vessels of more than 25,000DWT are not permitted entry if the wind is more than 15kts.

A power cable with a vertical clearance of 40.5m spans the S part of the harbour.

Between Guldmolmen (60°07.8'N 018°34.2'E) and Vandvik (60°05.7'N 018°35.4'E), speed is restricted to 12kts and thereafter to a position 1nm N of Hallstavik, it must not exceed 9kts. From 1nm N of Hallstavik to the berths, maximum speed is 5kts. The sides of the approach may be lined with log rafts, in which case a vessel is to proceed at the slowest speed consistent with safe steering.
