Approach

updated Aug 2010

Approach

The piers in Portage Cove are approached through Chilkoot Inlet and entered in clear water from a position approx 1.5nm NNW from Battery Point (59°13'N 135°22'W). The wharves in Kutak Inlet are approached and entered in clear water from a position 0.8nm WNW of Indian Rock Light (59°16'N 135°24'W).

Anchorages

Portage Cove: Entered between Nukdik Point (59°15'N 135°25'W) and the coast 1.25nm SSE, affords anchorage at least 0.5nm S from Nukdik Point avoiding 200m area in the NE part, and 0.2nm off the piers, in depths of 22.0-27.0m, sand and shell. Winds from the N can cause an appreciable sea at this anchorage. Shoal water extends approx 200m offshore from a gravel and boulder beach at the head of the cove.

Lutak Inlet: Is entered N of Tanani Point (59°16'N 135°26'W), provides the only good shelter from N winds in this area. Anchorage may be selected between 0.8nm and 2.5nm from the head of the inlet, in depths of 36-73m, good holding ground. Smaller vessels may anchor closer to the head but should give prudent clearance to the drying mud flats that extend 0.5nm off the mouth of Chilkoot River.

Restrictions

Movement is restricted to daylight hours only.

A bridge with a 12m span and a vertical clearance of 2.4m crosses the mouth of the Chilkoot River.

Tugs

Towage is available, if required.
