Approach
updated Feb 2015Approach
There are 2 entrance channels to Haeju Man, namely, So Gu (western passage, 37°45.6'N 125°38.3'E) and Tong Gu (eastern passage, 37°42.5'N 125°40.5'E).
Western passage: From the pilotage anchorage (37°41.0'N 125°33.5'E) the route leads NE to pass:
SE of Mu Do (37°44.5'N 125°33.5'E), an islet which has a height of 45m; between Yuk To (37°45.9'N 125°37.5'E), an islet which has a height of 32m, and the light (red round tower, 17m in height) on Hari Ch'o, 1nm SE. Then the route leads ENE for approx 2.25nm before turning NE to enter So Sudo (principal channel leading up to the harbour) and passes; close NW of the buoy (37°46.6'N 125°41.4'E), a black can; close NW of the light (black round tower, 16m in height) on Chin Ch'o (37°48.4'N 125°43.4'E); close E of a lightbuoy (red can) lying off the NE end of the 3m high rock "Wa Am" (37°50.3'N 125°44.3'E); close NW of a lightbuoy (black can), positioned 0.6nm ENE of Wa Am.
The route then follows the channel in a general N direction to pass:
Between a lightbuoy (red can) (37°54.2'N 125°45.3'E) and a group of rocks lying 0.2nm E, then: E of a lightbuoy (red can) lying 1nm NE of Man'gun Got (37°56.2'N 125°45.3'E), a point on the W shore: SW of a buoy (black can) (37°37.7'N 125°45.3'E). Then in mid-channel to Haeju Hang.
Eastern passage: This leads to Chungang Sudo (37°47.5'N 125°43.2'E) and Tong Sudo (37°47.5'N 125°47.3'E), which in turn lead to So Sudo, but both these channels have a bar near their junction with So Sudo and therefore can only be used by small vessels.
From seaward the route passes between: Kalli Do (Kaaryon) (37°42.9'N 125°39.3'E), an islet with a height of 52m, with 2 peaks, the higher of the two being sharp and prominent and Miryongni Do, an islet with a height of 33m positioned 1.75nm ESE.
Care should be taken to avoid the following dangers:
Puam So, a rock which dries at a height of 4.6m and lies 0.5nm S of Kalli Do, and of a rock, with a depth of 3.1m, lying 1nm SSE of Kalli Do.
Then if using Chungang Sudo, the route leads NNE to pass:
Between the light on Chin Ch'o (37°48.4'N 125°43.4'E) and the drying bank extending SW from Sosuap To (37°50.0'N 125°45.2'E), an islet with a height of 41m; here there is a bar with a least depth of approx 3.1m which the route has to cross to enter So Sudo.
Using Tong Sudo the route leads from Tong Gu in a NE direction, this route has a least depth of 1.0m and is therefore unsuitable for shipping.
Port limits
The harbour limits extend from 1.25nm N of Man'gun Got to 1.5nm W of Chong Do.
Traffic schemes and VTS
A Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) has been established in the approaches of Haeju.
Anchorages
There is a fair anchorage S of Chong Do (37°59.5'N 125°42.7'E) in depths of 6.7-9.1m, however the bottom is rocky. A single anchor with plenty of cable is recommended. The space is so restricted that vessels must anchor in mid-channel where the tidal streams are strong.
