Approach

updated Nov 2018

Approach

The harbour is approached between buoys (lateral) moored 1.5nm NW of Ras Nuh, then through a marked channel leading WSW.

The approach channel is 4.7km long, 206m wide and dredged to 14.0m. Port basin and turning area 595m in diameter.

If approaching from E, keep in depths of 20.0-25.0m until Ras Nuh is in sight. Even if the weather is hazy it should not be possible to pass the rocky peninsula without sighting it.

A wreck with masts visible, lies 9nm ESE from Jabal Sur.

A rocky spit extending 1nm S from Ras Nuh is usually marked by a ripple and, during the SW monsoon, by breakers.

If approaching from W it is inadvisable, especially in hazy weather, to enter depths less than 22.0m until Ras Nuh bears less than 350°.

Directions for Gwadar East Bay: Entry is between Jabal Sur (25°13'N 62°29'E) and Ras Nuh (8.75nm SW).

Directions for Gwadar West Bay: When approaching the E anchorage in Gwadar West Bay take care to avoid the spit extending S and SW of Ras Kamaiti and 8.8m and 7.6m patches 0.6nm W and 0.9nm NW of that point respectively.

In hazy weather, if not bound for Gwadar, keep a good lookout for fishing boats and canoes with their nets out.

Anchorages

For vessels using the deep water port, anchorage lies E of the fairway lightbuoy in depths between 15.0 and 26.0m.

Gwadar East Bay: A vessel may anchor in Gwadar East Bay with Ras Nuh bearing 160° distance 2.25nm in a depth of 6.0m, sand and shell.

Gwadar West Bay: Anchorage may be obtained in Gwadar West Bay in a depth of 7.3m with Ras Kamaiti bearing 198° distant approx 1.25nm or on the W side of the bay with Ras Pshukan bearing 182° distant approx 3nm in the same depth.

Prohibited anchorage: Both the approach channels and port areas should not be used for anchorage.

Restrictions

Akram Jetty (25°06.3'N 062°22.6'E) is a Pakistan Navy restricted area. Fishing is prohibited in both approach channels and ports area.

Tugs

The use of tugs is compulsory. The number required will be decided by the port and depends on the size of the vessel and whether it is fitted with operational bow thrusters.
