Approach
updated Oct 2014Approach
Approach and entry: The port is approached from the N side of Teluk Tomini and entered through Teluk Gorontalo, a bay giving access to the port of Gorontalo. Teluk Gorontalo is entered between a steep prominent point on the W side (02°29'N 123°02'E) and an unmanned point 2.5nm ESE. Excepting the site of the oil terminal, the W side of the bay is steep and hilly whilst the E side is lower and heavily wooded. A deep gully, 0.2nm wide over which there are depths of 210m, lies in a NE-SW direction in the centre of the harbour.
Access to Gorontalo can only be made by shallow draught vessels at HW, through a narrow channel on the E side of Sungai Gorontalo.
Port limits
Gorontalo is bounded by a line drawn from a position close N of the E entrance point in a 292° direction to the W shore, and by the parallel of the ruined pier situated on the W shore 0.3nm N of Batu Lajar (00°30'N 123°03'E), the W entrance point of the roadstead. The S limit is bounded by a line of 292.5°from the village of Liantu (00°29.5'N 123°03'E) to the opposite shore.
Anchorages
If there is a strong wind, it is advisable to anchor outside of the port limits in depths of between 40m and 75m. The best berth lies 0.1nm outside of the 10m contour situated in about 00°29.5'N 123°03.5'E, vessels of 10,000DWT have used this berth. 0.1nm farther W of this anchorage places a vessel over great depths, it is essential the depth be ascertained before releasing the anchor.
If available and practicable, anchorage may be obtained within harbour limits in depths of 50-80m. Small vessels may find anchorage closer to shore on either side of the harbour.
Restrictions
Berthing is carried out during daylight hours only, unberthing at any time.
