Approach

updated May 2017

Approach

The port is approached from Die Elbe through Gluckstadter Nebenelbe, the channel separating Rhinplatte from the E bank of Die Elbe, and entered between moleheads.

Directions for entering harbour: Gluckstadter Nebenelbe which leads E of Rhinplatte and forms the approach to Gluckstadt, can be entered from Die Elbe at both ends; the deeper approach is from N. The fairway is marked by buoys (lateral numbers, prefixed by letters GN), the positions of which are best seen from the chart.

Approach from N can be made by keeping (positioned from Gluckstadt North Mole Light (53°47.1'N 009°24.5'E)):

In the white sector (085-107°) of Gluckstadt Cross Light, exhibited from Gluckstadt front leading light structure (1.25nm N) then:

In a white sector (145-150°) of Gluckstadt North Mole Light (white round tower with gallery, 9m in height), standing close within the head of the mole, which leads through the N entrance; then channel buoyage can be followed.

Least depth in this fairway is approx 3.7m.

Approach from S can be made by keeping (positioned from Glluckstadt North Mole Light):

In the narrow white sector (176.1-177.6°) of the sectored light exhibited from Ruthensand front leading light structure (53°43.3'N 009°25.5'E) which leads through the S entrance then:

In a narrow white sector (343-346°) of Gluckstadt North Mole Light to within approx 0.8nm of that light; then channel buoyage can be followed.

Least depth in this fairway is normally about 3.0m but less may be encountered.
