Approach

updated Aug 2013

Approach

Gingoog Bay is entered between Sipaca Point and Diuata Point (09°06'N 125°13'E), 20nm ENE. The shores of the bay are fringed with narrow, steep to coral reefs and there are no dangers outside a distance of 1nm offshore.

The track leads SE passing NE of Talisayan (8°54.68'N 124°53.05'E) and NE of Medina (8°52.46'N 125°02.24'E). Another track leads SSE passing ENE of Minlagas (8°52.46'N 125°02.24'E) and continues SSE for 3 miles to a position N of Gingoog City.

Anchorages

Talisayan: Has an anchorage exposed to NE winds, close to the coastal reef N of Talisayan, in a depth of 37m.

Medina: Anchorage is not recommended on account of deep water close offshore. Large vessels sometimes anchor off the piers to load copra from lighters, which can be obtained from Cebu city.

Lunao: There is an anchorage 0.2nm off the pier in depths of 30-55m.

Gingoog: There is an anchorage 0.25nm N of the city in a depth of 27.0m.

Anakan: There is anchorage NW of the pier in a depth of 73m, in good holding, with Anakan Point bearing 078° or the city of Gingoog bearing about 243°. A pair of leading beacons (triangular, red and white stripes) are secured to trees on the hillside at elevations of 76m and 183m. The beacons in line, bearing 132°, lead to the anchorage NW of the pier. They are difficult to distinguish beyond a distance of 1.5nm.

Odiongan: There is an anchorage for smaller vessels on a ridge of sand and coral N of the E side of the entrance of the Odiongan river. Larger vessels may anchor 0.4nm offshore in 37m.

Magsaysay (Linugos): There is an anchorage obtained in 13m, sand and mud, well protected from NE winds.

Restrictions

Due to the presence of floating logs, which can cause propeller damage, arrival during daylight is recommended. Night movements are prohibited.

There is a dangerous rock lying on the coastal reef close SE of Sipaca Point. There is a detached coral shoal lying 0.25nm offshore and 7.3m deep and 0.25nm E of Gingoog city at depth of 1.2m.

Mooring

At Lunao terminal, it is recommended that vessels berth starboard side alongside during the SW monsoon and port side alongside during the NE monsoon. The use of an anchor is recommended.
