About FSO 'Nkossa II'

updated Aug 2023

Where it is

FSO 'Nkossa II' Terminal is situated approx 33nm SW from Pointe-Noire, off the coast of the Republic of the Congo.

The port

FSO 'Nkossa I' is no longer operational, it has since been sold, name changed to FSO 'YOHO' and relocated within the Nigeria coast.

FSO 'Nkossa II', LOA 230m and breadth 36m, was a joint venture with Maersk Group (51%) and SBM Offshore (49%) until the contract was awarded to EXMAR Shipmanagment in 2018. The contract allows EXMAR Ship Management technical management (operations, maintenance and crew management) for the FSO LPG unit and has allowed the company to develop a local shore base in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo in order to manage the technical, logistical and operational requirements of the FSO. The original contract was expected to last seven years however in 2022 the contract was extended. The oil field is majority owned by Total E&P Congo and minority by Chevron, Qatar Energy and Societe Nationale des Petroles du Congo.

Located within the Nkossa oil field lies the 30,000t NKossa floating production unit (FPU) in depths of 170m and linked to two drilling platforms (11,500t) 3,200m apart each designed to support up to 32 wells. The field began producing light, sweet crude in 1996 from the FPU.

The Nkossa oil field was discovered by Elf Congo in 1983 and as of 2023, oil recovered from the conventional oil field is 82.31% of its total recoverable reserves with 50,000bbls/day. Peak production was in 1997 and based on economic assumptions, production will continue until it reaches its economic limit in 2043.
