Pilotage is compulsory for tankers berthing at the offshore terminal and for all vessels transiting Canale di Fiumicino or Fiume Tevere. Pilots are available by day only for berthing, night unberthing permitted. The pilot boards within the Pilotage Zones, which extends 1nm from the SPM's or off the entrance to Canale di Fiumicino.
Vessels are required to arrange gangway or pilot ladder both port and starboard sides.

Max range approx 0.5m. The current in Canale di Fiumicino is variable and its greatest rate is from 6-7kts. Issuing from the canal entrance, the current generally turns gradually NNW, even in summer, and runs for a time parallel with the coast.
As considerable overfalls are caused by the out-going current from both mouths of Fiume Tevere, caution is necessary in boats, especially during onshore winds.

Harbour: Vessels bound for, or approaching from, the Canal Port of Fiumicino must pass 3.5nm N of Echo 1 Point or a position 4.5nm to the S of Echo 0 and head on a direct course without passing within the anchorage zones.
The canal is approximately 50m wide from the harbour entrance to the pedestrian swing bridge; channel width reduces to approximately 30m up-stream of it. Dersena Traiano, a square basin on the S side of the harbour, is a small craft marina.
The harbour entrance has a least depth of 4.1m. Although periodic dredging maintains an average depth of 4.0m within the port appreciable silting occurs. Depths are also subject to the condition of Fiume Tevere; in addition to the influence of natural conditions the river is used for generating hydro-electricity. Mariners should confirm available depth with the port authority.
Directions for leaving harbour: Vessels leaving harbour after berthing bows E should normally turn within the harbour. However in good conditions it is possible to make a stern first departure.
Anchorages
Delta Zone: Inshore anchorage for vessels with draught under 3.0m.
Prohibited anchorage: Anchoring and fishing are prohibited in an area extending 4.5nm WSW of the entrance to Canale di Fiumicino. A submarine cable lands 0.7nm N of the canal entrance.
Restrictions
The pedestrian footbridge will also be opened to coincide with the opening of 2 Giugno lifting bridge.
Vessels leaving Canale di Fiumicino have right of way.
There is a speed limit of 3kts within Canale di Fiumicino.
Vertical clearance: A pedestrian swing bridge and the 2 Giugno lifting bridge, respectively 0.25nm and 0.75nm E of the harbour entrance, obstruct the canal when closed. The pedestrian bridge swings clear of the channel; the lifting bridge has a vertical clearance of 23m when open.
Tugs
Available. One tug is compulsory for tankers over 10,000GT for mooring/unmooring.
All tankers must have tugboat rope prepared during mooring/unmooring manoeuvres. Also tugboat rope must be ready astern from the time of berthing to unberthing.
