Approach

updated May 2017

Approach

From seaward vessel should steer to pass W of Vestre Roholmflua (58°02'N 006°51'E), Roholmane and Nordre Roholmflua. Then E of Faeroyflua Lightbuoy, Hellene and Sondre Katland. Houses, on the NW of Langoy, in line with the E extremity of Sondre Katland bearing 023°, or Homsknipen in line with Sondre Katland Lighthouse, bearing 016°, lead E of Faeroyflua and Villaflua.

After passing E of Svartskjaerflua, Bukkegrunnane and Benteflua, vessels should steer to keep in the middle of the channel and pass between Store Haoy and Lille Haoy, 0.15nm W, avoiding Nodre Haoyflua. Pass either NE or SW of Skyskjer when approaching the harbour at Farsund.

At night, bearing between 349°-028° and between 042°-053°, respectively, both lead between Vestre Roholmflua and Faeroyflua into the white sector of Langoy Light, bearing between 005°-011°, which leads E of Bukkergrunnane and W of Svartskjaer to within 0.5nm of the light. Then the white sector of Store Haoy Light (58°05'N 006°51'E), bearing between 318°-330°, leads to abreast Risholmen, and the red sector of the light, bearing between 330°-352°, clears the SW edge of Sore Haoyflua.

The white sectors of Store Haoy Light, bearing between 110°-114°, or between 122°-131°, astern, lead SW or NE, respectively, of Skyskjer and Fisholmen.

An alternative approach from seaward is in the white sector of Sondre Katland Light, bearing between 315°-318°, which leads close SW of Midtfjordskjaer (1nm W of Store Kubbesteinen) and close NE of Austre Roholmflua into the white sector of Langoy Light, bearing between 005°-011°, continuing as directed previously.

Another route is available when approaching Ulleroysundet from W as directed previously until E of Sondre Katland Lighthouse (58°03'N 006°51'E), then, bringing the lighthouse astern, bearing 272°, which leads through the fairway N of Lindholmbaen and between Hestholmflua and Fleskehella.

At night, vessels should approach in the white sector of Sondre Katland Light, bearing between 349°-028° and when in the white sector of Bremerodden Light, bearing between 042°-053°, alter course to keep in that sector which leads close NW of Lindholmbaen. Then steer E in the white sector of Sondre Katland Light, bearing between 267°-273°, astern, passing between Lindholmen and Bremerodden, until in the white sector of Teroy Light bearing between 103°-117°. The latter sector leads between Hestholmflua and Fleskehella to within 0.2nm of the light.

Anchorages

Large vessels anchor E of Engoy (58°05.4'N 006°49'E) in a depth of 55m, clay. Vessels of moderate size can anchor S of Engoy as far as the entrance to Lundevagen, where there is the best holding ground of mud. Small vessels anchor in the harbour between Engoy and the town, taking care to avoid a submarine cable between Engoy and Faroy.
