Approach

updated Oct 2018

Approach

The main entrance from the S is 230m long, 110m wide, 12.5m deep with several sector lights. Constant outgoing flow. No tidal range.

The harbour is approached either E of Eigeroy through Sondregapet, the principal channel, or N of the island through Nordregapet which connects with Sondregapet at Nysundet. Nordregapet and Nysundet are only suitable for small vessels.

Sondregapet: S approach: Vessels should steer to pass midway between Svaholmane (58°22.0'N 006°02.0'E) and Stabbsaetet, taking care to avoid the dangers off the islets.

Svetlingen Beacon tower bearing 313°, in line with Stabbsaetet, leads 0.1nm SW of Kletten. Fugleodden open W of the E entrance point of Sondregapet 0.9nm S, bearing more than 346° leads W of Kletten and Isakflua.

Varbergodden (58°27.0'N 006°00.0'E) open E of Vibberodden, bearing 357°, leads 0.1nm E of Merri. The channel should then be followed.

At night, vessels should approach Sondregapet in the white sector of Vibberodden Light, bearing between 341°-355°, which leads W of Kletten and Isakflua, and E of Merri, then, the white sector of Fugleodden Light, bearing between 349°-352°, leads along the channel to within 0.15nm of the light. After passing Sonnenvikodden Light (58°26.2'N 005°59.5'E), vessels should keep in the white sector of Fugleodden Light, bearing between 173°-179°, astern, which leads to Egersund outer anchorage.

W approach: Course should be made to pass between Store Svetlingen and the S side of Bronnesfluene.

At night, vessels should approach in the white sector of Skarvoy Light, bearing between 058°-069°, which leads between Store Svetlingen and Bronnesfuene to within 0.3nm of the light. Then steer to pass S of the light and enter the white sector of Fugleodden Light, bearing between 349°-352° and continue as by the previous night directions.

Nordregapet: Main approach: Vessels should steer for the whitewashed mark on Seilsteinen until Guleholmen Beacon tower comes into line with Grunnsundholmen Light structure, bearing 056°, then vessels should alter course NE on this alignment to pass NW of Tryet. The passage between Tryet and Guleholmen cannot be distinguished until a vessel is close to Tyret. After passing SE of Guleholmen, vessels should steer for the anchorage between Grunnsundholmen and Horsholmen. A vessel with a draught of less than 5.0m can proceed through the dredged channel N of Grunnsundholmen and continue E through Nordregapet. Nysundet, which connects Nordre Sundet with Sondregapet, is dredged to a depth of 5.5m.

At night, vessels should approach in the white sector of Ruskodden Light, bearing between 088°-093°, which leads through the fairway N of Tyret and into the green sector of Grunnsundholmen Light, bearing between 045.5°-052°, passing SE of Guleholmen (58°27.4'N 005°53.2'E). Then the white sector of Ruskodden Light, bearing between 185°-208°, astern, leads to the anchorage between Grunnsundholmen and Horsholmen. From this sector, the alignment of Toresoy and Krakeskjaer Lights, bearing 077°, leads through the dredged channel close N of Grunnsundholmen, marked by spar buoys (3 green, 2 red) toward Nordre Sundet.

NW approach: Steer for Sundsgapet, the channel between Sundsgapholmen and the mainland, keeping Krakeskjaer Light structure in line with the N extremity of Sundsgapholmen, bearing approx 084°, which leads close S of Dyroyflu (58°27.8'N 005°51.7'E), awash and marked by an iron perch. When entering Sundsgapet, vessels should keep the N extremity of Sundsgapholmen, bearing less than 096°, to pass S of a 6.0m shoal lying near the middle of the channel close within the W entrance.

A vessel with a draught of not more than 4.0m can continue E into Nordre Sundet by passing over a bar between the N side of Horsholmen and the mainland, then through the dredged channel N of Grunnsundholmen. The S islet of Skjerpingane (58°28.1'N 005°50.4'E) just visible between the S extremity of Dyroy and the N extremity of Sundsgapholmen, bearing 279°, astern, leads through the fairway over the bar N of Horsholmen.
