updated Feb 2022Approach
Approach to the mooring buoy is from the W of the buoy with a heading of approx 090°.
Anchorages
Stand-by anchorage area: A circle, radius 1nm is located with centre located at 02°48.23'N 009°47.07'E.
Restrictions
Mooring at the buoy is carried out in daylight only, between 0600-1800hrs, however sailing may take place at night.
Mooring
Terminal Mooring Team: A team of 4 to 6 deck hands, under the responsibility of the Loading Master, may be provided by the terminal, in order to give assistance to the ship's crew, but without substituting them. However, winches and windlasses are operated exclusively by the ship's crew.
Approach to the buoy: While the ship is approaching the buoy, a workboat provided by the terminal is used to keep the floating hoses away from the ship's course.
Meanwhile the Loading Master, or the terminal's Zodiac crew, provide the pilot and the Master with the required information.
Securing the mooring rope: The mooring team on the forecastle sends a messenger line, (diameter 30mm, length 200m) passing through a centre fairlead. The end of which is sent to the terminal's Zodiac, when the tanker is at a convenient distance from the buoy.
The Zodiac crew connects this messenger to the end of the polypropylene hawser, (heaving line, diameter 80mm, length 180m) attached to the mooring rope of the buoy.
The messenger rope and the heaving line are hauled in using a tanker winch or windlass, until a convenient length of chain, placed between the heaving line and the mooring rope of the buoy is on deck.
This chain is then made fast, using the tanker's bow chain stopper, which should be in accordance with OCIMF dimensions.
Pulling off: The terminal workboat keeps the vessel away from the buoy once the vessel is moored. As the mooring is fastened, the workboat proceeds to the stern of the vessel. To secure the end of the tanker, a hawser is then attached onto her towing winch. Using this towing rope, the workboat shall apply a moderate but permanent pull for the duration of loading, to avoid her bow coming in contact with the buoy, should a change of current or wind arise.
