Approach

updated May 2023

Approach

Approach is without obstruction, depth at the entrance is 35m.

Vessels approaching from the Mljet channel enter SW through the Koloyep channel passing Veliki Vratnik, Lopudska vrata or Koloyepska vrata. The Koloyep channel is then navigated between the coastline and the

islands of Sipan, Ruda, Lopud and Koloyep (42°40'N 018°04'E).

Another approach can be used in the approach to the Great Gate, with the island of Kolocep to the W and the Grebeni rocks to the E. Due to its quick access to the open sea this approach is used for international navigation.

Smaller vessels may pass between Grebeni rock and the Seka rock, however this passage is narrow with a small depth (8m), with an increase in traffic during the summer months. This passage is permitted for vessels with an LOA less than 20m however requests can be made for approval for larger vessels via VHF from VTS Dubrovnik.

A bridge stands at the mouth to the entrance for the Dubrovnik River.

Note: In case of an emergency it is advised to use the Mala vrata passage.

About Dubrovnik

updated May 2023

Where it is

Dubrovnik is situated in the southernmost part of the Republic of Croatia, approx 220km from Split.

The port

The sheltered harbour, open 24 hours a day, recently diversified to accommodate the tourist industry. Prior to 1991, the port orientated towards timber and refrigerated goods however this has changed in recent years due to large investments. As a result, the main commercial port in Dubrovnik heavily focuses on passengers from cruise, fast ferry and Ro-Ro vessels. The port is capable of receiving up to five cruise vessels simultaneously. General cargo and fishing vessels are also handled within the port to cater for the local industries.

Located within the port is the public marina of Gruz which is used by private pleasure yachts and local vessels. Terminal Sustjepan on the other hand is used as a bunkering operation for passenger ships and fishing vessels.

Traffic

Approx. 5,000 vessels and 400,000 passengers handled annually.
