Approach
updated Aug 2014Approach
The entrance to Degerhamn, 55m in width, faces SSW between the heads of a long W mole and a short E mole. Both mole heads are floodlit and should not be passed closer than 10m. The approach channel 0.75nm in length, leading from SW. It has been dredged to 6.5m. It is well marked by lightbuoys, buoys and leading lights.
The maximum permitted draught in the channel is 5.9m but caution should be exercised as the channel is liable to silting.
From a position to seaward about 2nm SW of the harbour, approach on the alignment (052°) of Degerhamn Sodra Leading Lights. This alignment leads 1.5nm NE to a position 0.6nm from the front light, entering the dredged channel, marked by lightbuoys and buoys (lateral), 1nm SW of the front light.
Vessels close to the limiting draught for the channel should note a 7.5m shoal patch, on the leading line 1.5nm from the front light, and pass well to the NW of the alignment until well clear of the shoal.
Then to the alignment (018°) of Degerhamn Leading Lights. This alignment leads 0.5nm NNE, through the centre of the buoyed channel to the harbour entrance, between the breakwater heads which are floodlit and which must be passed no closer than 10m.
Each side of the buoyed channel is also indicated by a pair of lights, in line bearing 018°, exhibited from the quay each side of the leading lights. The W pair show red lights and the E pair show green lights.
Anchorages
The best anchorage off Degerhamn is in a depth of 9.0m, clay, 1.25nm SW of the harbour entrance, but vessels must be prepared to put to sea with winds from the W semicircle.

About Degerhamn
updated Feb 2025Where it is
Degerhamn is located on the W coast of Oland Island, 9.0nm N of Olands Sodra Udde, Sweden.
The port
The Port of Degerhamn, strategically located on the southern coast of Oland, has played a pivotal role in the operations of the local cement factory since its establishment in 1888. The port serves as a critical logistical hub for the cement industry, however, in 2019 it was announced that there would be a reduction in production of cement at the Heidelberg Material site.
Recognising the need for modernisation and protection, the port underwent significant reconstruction in the early 1890s. In 1892 and again in 1897, substantial improvements were made, culminating in the construction of two large breakwaters. The design of the port features an entrance channel from the South.
