Approach

The entrance channel has a width of 140m and length of 3.5km, in a depth of 10.7m. The max LOA of 234m and draught of 10.5m can allow to approach the channel.

Vessels approaching Dar es Salaam Bay from the SE should steer for Ras Kankadya on a bearing of 287°, leading about 1.5nm North of Millard Bank. When the lights on Ras Kidandoni come into range 247°, steer on that heading passing South of Daphne Reefs. When Outer Makatumbe Light bears 144°, steer for the range lights on Ras Rongoni (Marker LM3, Q(1).W.11m and LM4, Iso (1).22m) on a heading of 188°, passing through Porthand markers Nos 4 and 6 and Starboardhand markers Nos 3 and 5. Then proceed to the entrance channel of Dar es Salaam harbour, approximately 0.75nm, where a bearing of 231° should be steered in to the harbour.

If the vessel is anchoring in the bay, a course may be set for the anchorage when Outer Makatumbe Light bears 118°.Vessels approaching from the North should steer with Outer Makatumbe Light bearing not less than 180° and then alter course when the Ras Kidandoni Range Lights come in line bearing 247° and proceed as previously described.

Inner Port: Three red buoys (Q(1)R) Nos 14, 16 and 18 mark the NE side of the main access channel, opposite the Harbour Quay. A bearing of 153.7° should be followed using leading markers LM9 (Q(1).W. 21m) and LM10 (Iso(1).W.27m).

Channel has a maximum safe navigation draught of 9.5m at low tide and the minimum safe under keel clearance (UKC) of 05.m.

Port limits

From a position SE of Ras Korongo (06°51'S 039°24'E), the seaward limit of the port 000° to the W extremity of Outer Sinda, then to the S extremity of Mbudya (06°40'S 039°15'E) then 254° to a position on the coast S of the entrance to Mto Peremji.
