Approach

updated Sep 2010

Approach

Directions: Vessels approaching Porto Vecchio from the N must avoid a rocky ledge, with a depth of 3.5m over it, which extends approx 0.1nm E of the head of Molo Vecchio. With fresh E winds, the sea breaks at the mouth of Porto Vecchio and makes entrance difficult.

The W side of the entrance to Porto Vecchio is protected by Pontile Sanita which is quayed and projects 0.05nm E from the shore abreast the head of Molo Vecchio. A light is exhibited from a red metal column, 6m in height, at the head of Pontile Sanita.

There are normally depths of approx 5.0m in the entrance and outer part of Porto Vecchio, and of approx 4.3m alongside the quays, but the harbour is subject to silting.

Porto Nuovo: Approaching from the N the platforms are clearly visible. A light is exhibited from a red metal framework tower, 4m in height, standing near the head of Molo Foraneo.

Caution: The head of Molo Foraneo should be given a berth of 100m and the head of Molo Sottoflutto a berth of 50m.

A light is exhibited from a green structure, 4m in height, standing at the head of Nuovo Molo di Sottflutto. Two lights, disposed vertically, are exhibited from a green mast, 6m in height, standing at the head of Molo Giunti.

Anchorages

Outer anchorage: SE of Crotone with Molo Vecchio Light, in depths of 13.0m, good holding ground but exposed to E winds.

With S winds, vessels can anchor NW of the new harbour not less than 0.5nm off the coast although due to the sealine connecting with the offshore platform, it is recommended to anchor N side (at least 0.7nm) off line joining "Porto Nuovo" red light to platform "Luna A".

Tugs

"Corigliano" 1,946hp, 30t bollard pull. "Gecko" 2,000hp, 29t bollard pull. Compulsory for vessels over 1,600GT or carrying dangerous cargo and for all vessels exceeding 2,500GT.

About Crotone

updated Sep 2010

Where it is

Crotone is located on the SE coast of Italy, approx 85nm S of Taranto.

The port

The port is divided into two parts, Porto Vecchio (Old Port) in the S, and Porto Nuovo (New Port) in the N which are separated by a breakwater 3.6km in length. Owing to the scarcity of harbours of refuge along this coast, both of these harbours are often congested in winter.

The port handles general, bulk and liquid cargoes within its two bays (N and S).

Exports: Zinc in ingots and sulphuric acid. Imports: Cereals and zinc ore.
