Approach

The port is entered from the natural deep water of Lake Erie between two breakwaters into a sheltered, outer harbour. A dredged channel leads approx 0.4nm from the South East end of the outer harbour, South into the Conneaut River to the dock areas on either side of the river. A Federal dredging project gives depths of approximately 8.5m in the outer harbour with 6.7m in the outer harbour mooring area, just west of the channel. The river channel has a depth of 8.2m. Vessels approaching from the East should not mistake the lights on the piers at the river mouth for the breakwater lights.

Anchorages

There are no designated anchorage areas at Conneaut Harbor but vessels may anchor west of the west outer breakwater in approximately 8.5m to 11.5m of water.

The port

The harbour is formed by a breakwater protecting an outer harbour and inner harbour. There are two distinct harbour areas within the outer breakwater. To the West are the marinas for recreational and fishing vessels, operated by Conneaut Port Authority, which is separate from the Dock area, owned and operated by The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company. The Dock area has facilities for the discharging of iron ore and limestone and the loading of coal and is mainly used by Laker vessels.
