Approach

updated May 2020

Approach

The entrance channel is dredged to 10.2m and surrounding anchorages have depths to 11.0m. Depths in and outside the port are susceptible to change but are subject to an on going dredging programme.

A vessel should approach Grande Passe steering for Boulbine Lighthouse bearing 011°, passing approx 0.7nm E of Recife du Tonnelier and close W of Conakry Lightbuoy, (09°27.5'N 013°43.7'W), which leads to the entrance channel and Lightbuoys No 1 and 2, which are moored approx 1.0nm ENE of Ile du Goulu. From these lightbuoys, course should be altered to pass between the lightbuoys marking the channel and into the harbour. Masters are advised the lights and buoys may be unreliable as they may be extinguished, out of position or missing.

At night, a vessel should approach within the white sector of Boulbine Light bearing less than 015° and within the white sector of the light on Digue de la Prudente bearing between 350.5° and 008.5°.

Anchorages

Anchorage can be obtained 0.6nm NE of Ile du Goulu and 0.5nm W of the entrance to the buoyed channel.

Anchorage can be obtained 0.75nm ENE of Pointe du Mat in a depth of 7.0m.

Anchorage can also be obtained 0.5nm W of Boulbine Lighthouse, clear of the channel, in a depth of approx 9.0m. There is space for two vessels in this anchorage but at spring tides the current is strong and in winter there is a heavy sea and communication with the shore is difficult.

Anchorage is prohibited, owing to submarine cables, within an area S of Ile Tombo and between Boulbine Lighthouse and Ile Kassa.

Tugs

There are 2 tugs, one of which is compulsory for berthing/unberthing. A second tug is normally used for vessels over LOA 150m. Tugs are ordered via agent or on VHF Ch 16.
