Approach
updated Nov 2018Approach
The visible sector (302-322°) of a light (triangle point-down on mast on white hut) exhibited on a ruined fort (38°22.2'N 026°08.4'E) situated near the middle of the N breakwater leads NW to the harbour entrance. The harbour entrance is 144m wide with depth of 10.0m at entrance, decreasing towards berths, where a max of 7.5m is available at the North Berth.
Anchorages
Outer anchorage: The anchorage off Chios extends from 0.5nm S to 2nm N of the harbour entrance. For a distance of approx 4nm N of the harbour entrance, the coast is fringed by a narrow bank, but the bottom falls away steeply and at a distance of approx 0.3nm from the shore the depths are considerable. The recommended anchorage is approx 1nm NE of the citadel, in depths of 22.0-33m, mud. It is possible to anchor nearer the harbour, but here the bottom consists of soft mud and the holding is not so good.
A submarine outfall pipe marked at its extremity by a lightbuoy (special) extends approx 1,000m NE from a position 1.25nm S of the harbour entrance.
Tugs
Compulsory for vessels of 1,000GT and over, except Greek coastal vessels. One tug available offering services inside and outside the port.
