About Cape Preston

updated Sep 2016

Where it is

Cape Preston is a privately owned port facility approx 30nm SW of Dampier Port and Karratha.

The port

CITIC Pacific Mining operates the Sino Iron Desalination Plant located at Cape Preston which produces large quantities of iron ore for transhipment. The transhipment system consists of a breakwater to shelter the loading facilities onshore, a port stockyard, conveyor system, a barge loader that is similar to a small ship loader and a large fleet of barges and transhipment vessels. The conveyor will carry iron ore along the 2.6km breakwater to the barge loaders. The barges will then be loaded and towed by tugs approx. 20km offshore to the STS transhipment area and transferred over to CITIC's own purpose-built 115,00DWT bulk carriers which will transport the cargo further to the company's Chinese steel mills.
