Approach
updated Oct 2013Approach
Dredged depths in the entrance channels are from 7.2-8.1m.
A vessel approaching from W should keep in a depth of 27.0m until the Leading Beacon bears 046°, when it should be steered for on that alignment to pass NW of Recorder, Henderson and Bull Rocks and SE of Congo Rock. When past the latter, the anchorage should be steered for.
A vessel approaching from E should give Newill Rock and Brenton Rock a berth of at least 0.5nm, and should not attempt to pass between Cape Palmas and Brenton, Outer and Yoruba Rocks. When the beacon bears 031°, it should be steered for on that bearing, using the danger angle of the lighthouse, until Cape Rocks and the lighthouse are in line, bearing 075°, when the anchorage can be steered for, taking care to give Yorube Rocks a berth of at least 0.25nm.
A vessel can also approach from the E by keeping in a depth of 27.0m until the beacon bears 046°, after which they should proceed as above.
A red can buoy is moored 0.075nm S of Recorder Rock.
A red can buoy is moored between Outer Rock and Cape Rocks.
A green conical buoy is moored 0.15nm SSE of Brenton Rock.
The turning basin has a dredged depth of 6.1-6.6m and alongside quay has been dredged to 6.1-6.4m.
Anchorages
Anchorage can be obtained by vessels of moderate draught from 0.9nm WNW of Cape Palmas in a depth of 16.0m, sand. Small vessels will find some shelter from the swell between 0.35-0.45nm NW of the Cape in a depth of 7.3m. The holding ground is good and vessels generally lie head on to the swell.
Ocean going vessels anchor in the open roadstead, which has depths from 11.0m to 16.5m.
Anchorage can also be obtained approx 0.5nm S of Cape Palmas in a depth of 16.0m.
Tugs
3 tugs are used for towing barges and logs.

Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI): Liberia has signed a PSI ship boarding agreement with the USA aimed at stemming the flow of weapons of mass destruction.
