Approach
updated May 2022Approach
Basin No 1 Channel: The channel is designed to be a 100,000DWT class, one-way channel for the near future. In the long run, it will meet the one-way navigational needs of 150,000DWT class bulk cargo ships and the two-way navigational needs of 50,000DWT class bulk cargo ships. The depth of the channel is 15m, and the total length of the channel is 8,920m.
The Breakwater Project located at the entrance of Basin No 1 is the 1,219m long eastern breakwater and the 1,761m long western breakwater, which have already been constructed.
Future Basin No 2 Channel: The Channel Project is designed for the one-way navigation of 50,000DWT class liquid chemical vessels on the tide, and the bottom of the channel will have a depth of 13.8m. According to the navigation flow conditions at different locations, the standard section of the outer channel will have a width of 180m, the entrance will have a width of 280 m, and the standard section of the inner channel will have a width of 160m. The dredged channel will be 8,142m total in length, of which the outer channel will be 3,788m long.
The Breakwater Project is to construct two breakwaters at the entrance of Basin No 2, the eastern breakwater will be 486.4m long, and the western breakwater will be 563.4m long. The opening in the breakwaters will be 530m wide, and the elevation of the tops of the breakwaters will be 5.5m.
Future Basin No 3 Channel: The channel is designed for the one-way navigation of 30,000DWT class bulk cargo vessels. The bottom of the channel will have a depth of 12m and will be 150m wide, and the channel will be 26,27km in length. It will be connected to the 12m isobathic waters of the outer sea and forty-one buoys are to be set up on both sides of the channel.
Traffic schemes and VTS
The Caofeidian VTS operates within an area bounded by the shoreline and 38°43'N, between meridians 118°55'E and 118°15'E.
Participation in the VTS is mandatory for the following vessels:
1. Passenger vessels.
2. Vessels carrying dangerous cargo.
3. All vessels 500 DWT and larger.
4. Voluntary for any other vessels.
1. Inbound vessels when crossing a Reporting Line-All information contained in the table titled Caofeidian VTS - Reporting Format. Any vessel with an operating AIS on board does not need to report Items C or D, E and F as the will collected automatically.
2. Outbound vessels when crossing a Reporting line - Only the vessel name.
Anchorages
There are three specially designated anchorages on either side of approach to Caofeidian.
The Eastern Large Tanker Anchorage, with depths of 22 to 32m, lies SE of Caofeidian Light and is best seen on the chart. Wrecks and other obstructions in the anchorage can reduce depth as little as 21.4m.
The Western Large Tanker Anchorage, with depths of 24 to 29m, lies SW of Caofeidian Light and is seen on the chart. A dangerous wreck lies near the center of the anchorage.
An anchorage for other vessels besides tankers adjoins the Western large Tanker anchorage and extends 5miles W and 1.2miles N as seen on the chart with depths 15 to 20m.
An additional anchorage area for tankers of up to 150,000DWT lies approximately 18 miles SE of Caofeidian Light, in depths of 22m, clay. This anchorage can be used by as many as 2 tankers with drafts less than 17.5m.
New anchorage areas of Large Bulk cargo Vessels and VLCCs have been established S of the TSS as follows:
1. large Bulk Cargo Vessels No.1 - An area bounded by lines joining the following positions:
a. 38°48'10"N, 118°23'07"E.
