Approach

The recommended approach for large vessels is from seaward, N of Xuy Nong Chao to the pilot boarding ground, then by Passe Henriette to Vinh Ha Long and via the dredged channel to Cua Luc. Cai Lan port is approached though Cua Luc and is built on reclaimed land in the NW part, approx 1.5nm from the entrance.

The total length of the channel is 36km and is in two sections. From 0 to Hon Mot Buoy, length 25.5km, width 300-400m, depth 13.0 - 20.0m and from Hon Mot Buoy to the dock, length 10.5km, width 130m, depth 10m.

Anchorages

Anchorage can be obtained in Cai Lan port, close inside the entrance, within depths of 15.0 to 17.0m and anywhere in the deep water close S of Cua Luc. Small vessels are advised to anchor off Va Chai, 0.2nm SW of the W entrance point of Cua Luc, within depths of 0.4m to 8.0m, where the tidal streams are weak.

Local knowledge is required when anchoring.

Caution: In the deep water close S of Cua Luc, when the tidal stream is against the wind, the sea is rough for vessels.
