Approach

updated Aug 2010

Approach

The main approach is through Rutland North Channel and Rutland Harbour. There is also a S approach through Rutland South Channel and an approach from the N through a very narrow channel close E of Inishcoo but both these approaches should only be attempted with local knowledge.

Dredged channel: The port is entered through a channel, 0.3nm in length and marked by leading lights, dredged through the drying sandbanks which front the port. The channel is tidal for all vessels over 2.5m draught.

Directions for entry: After passing No 6 Light Beacon in Rutland Harbour and clear of the narrows between Edernish and Rutland Island:

Leading lights: Front light (grey concrete beacon, white band, 4m in height) stands, at an elevation of 17m, 0.1nm E of the quay at Burtonport.

Rear light (grey concrete beacon, yellow band, 7m in height) stands, at an elevation of 23m, 0.2nm ENE of the front light.

The alignment (068°) of these lights leads through the dredged channel passing close S of a drying rock marked by a beacon (concrete) (0.22nm WSW of the front leading light).

On passing this beacon a vessel may alter course N and as requisite to approach the quay.

Submarine cable: A submarine cable from Rutland Island crosses the dredged channel and lands N of the quay at Burtonport.

Anchorages

South of Calf Island in Arran Roads. Approx position 54°59.7'N 008°29.3'W.

Restrictions

All cargo vessels must enter during daylight and at high tide. A pilot is advisable as the entrance, although well marked, can be awkward.

Mooring
