Approach

updated Nov 2023

Approach

From a position at the seaward end of the SW bound traffic lane, about 5.5nm NE of Capo di Torre Cavallo, the track leads 5.3nm WSW to the harbour entrance. Max draughts range throughout the harbours from 1.5-25.0m.

Traffic schemes and VTS

An area of first contact with Brindisi VTS extends 3nm from the outer limits of the VTS.

Note: Any faults, accidents or loss of polluting cargo that may occur after the message reporting entry into the VTS area must be immediately communicated.

Anchorages

South East Anchorage: Situated 5.0nm E of Capo di Torre Cavallo and in depths of 34-46m.

North West Anchorage: The recommended anchorage for small and medium vessels, is situated 2.5nm WNW of Punta Penne in depths of 21.0-51m.

Restrictions

Berthing is not permitted during night time for certain vessels.

Masthead Height: Due to close proximity of the airfield there are masthead height restrictions applying to vessels berthing in the following areas:

1. Costa Morena - Less than 45m.

2. Banchina di Riva - 40m.

3. Nuovo Sporgente di Costa Morena - 36m.

Entry restricted area: All vessels, are prohibited from navigating within the coastal zone extending 6nm from the coast between Torre Guaceto and Torre San Gennaro (40°32.4'N 018°04.0'E).

An area SE of the port has an air draught restriction of 30m due to the close proximity to the airfield. Aircraft may also moor along the shores of Porto Medio. In the event that flight operations are in place a green and white flag is flown from the signal station. Vessels must display movements while the aforementioned flag is displayed.

Caution must be taken for mariners in and around the approach to the port as silting will occur within the port and depths may be less than those reported. A submarine pipeline extends SE from the oil berths to the SE shore of Porto Esterno. It has been reported that there are several unlit mooring buoys are located within the port and caution must be taken throughout the night. It is also known that the land in the vicinity of the port is low and difficult to identify and register. This can become extremely difficult during S'ly winds and when a haze is prevalent and as a result caution must be taken.

Throughout the port the character of the bottom can determine the position of the vessel; weeds to the S, hard mud to the N and rock, sand, or gravel in between the two.

Vessels over 500GT carrying goods or passengers are to avoid certain areas which have been established in the NW and the SE areas of the port.

An un-exploded ordnance area lies on the N side near the head of Diga di Punta Riso.

At Berths 15-19B the mooring of two vessels simultaneously must take place in favourable conditions. In the events of winds 28-33kts the assistance of at least 1 tug will be required. A pilot on duty may be authorised the moorings in the swath of a single Ro-Ro vessel. In strong winds 34-40kts mooring is not allowed.

Mooring

Mooring and unmooring services are carried out by Group of the "Mooringmen of the Port". The Group is made up of sixteen members who work a continuous service and provide three vessels. Telephone: +39 0831 527 633.

In the event the vessel at Berth 18 has to leave the berth before the vessel moored at Berth 17, the port authority may authorise the clearance of the vessel at Berth 18, provided that the vessel at Berth 17, with pilot on board, has sufficient room to manoeuvre.

For mooring at Berth 22 gas tankers over 5,000GT must require the assistance of one tug vessel.
