Approach

There are very few coastal landmarks in this area. The following should provide some help for approaching purpose.

The terminal radio transmitter building with adjacent skeletal steel antenna tower each 80m tall and painted red and white in colour bands is located in approx position 00°06'N 117°27'E. The towers are surrounded by fixed red air warning lights.

A land fall light is located on Beras Basah Island in the approx position 00°03.80'N 117°33.50'E. The characters of light are Fl(3+2)W20 5s.

There is a top white tower approx 36m above CD (130cm below mean sea level) with a visibility of 22nm.

Dedicated harbour channel: The Pertamina's dedicated harbour has a harbour channel approx 8nm in length which forks left to the second dock and to the right at the first dock at the East Cardinal Lightbuoy (marker A-B). The harbour channel has the following installed: 42 unit buoys, 6 pairs of range lights and 1 unit sector light located on the top of control room of the second dock.

An area of 2,000m in radius around the outer sea buoy has been wire swept to a depth of 20.0m. The outer sea buoy may be passed close by on either side when approaching South Bontang Terminal Entrance Channel.

Caution: Right and left hand channel markers are the reverse of International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) practice to suit Indonesian requirement. The channel runs through coral reefs but is well defined by lighted buoys equipped with radar reflectors. Range light and markers are provided on each reach of the channel. Channel Entrance Buoys 2 and 3 and all buoys marking turns are fitted with quick flashing lights.

The channel width at its narrowest point is 600m ad the controlling depth is 14.0m in the turning basin.
