Approach

updated Sep 2024

Approach

Approach: Bergen is approached from the N via Fedje Pilot Station, Fedjeosen, Hjeltefjorden and the SW part of Byfjorden; and from the S via Marsteinen Pilot Station, Korsfjorden, Raunefjorden, Vatlestraumen, and the SW part of Byfjorden.

Caution: Submerged rocks (2.9m below CD) on the SW side of the approach to Damsgardssundet (Puddefjorden) - off Damsgard.

Traffic in Vagen can be particularly congested: vessels inbound or outbound should stay as far to starboard as practicable through the entrance, to allow other vessels maximum sea room.

Inbound vessels with draught less than 3.7m are reportedly permitted to enter S of the Nordnes starboard lateral buoy (FL G 4s), if practicable.

Port limits

The harbour district stretches from Fensfjorden in the N, to Bjoernefjorden in the S, and covers 11 municipalities.

Traffic schemes and VTS

Anchorages

Anchorage at Sandviksflaket, off Sandviken. Depths from 22-50m. Beware shallows off Hegreneset peninsula.

Vessels of considerable size may anchor in the outer part of Puddefjorden except W of a line formed by the alignment of the outer corner of Dokkeskjaerskaien (60°23.3'N 005°18.5'E) with the outer corner of Frieleneskaien, 2 cables to the SE. This area E of Kirkebukten Harbour lies on the leading line to Puddefjordsbroen bridge. The anchorage is exposed to NW winds but holding ground is reportedly good.

Restrictions

Askoy Bridge (60°24.00'N 005°13.00'E), has a vertical clearance of 62m.

Sotra Bridge (60°22.30'N 005°10.00'E), which has vertical clearance 49m. There is also an overhead cable (vertical clearance 50m) S of the Sotra Bridge, and several other small bridges exist within the harbours.
