Tides

Range 2.1m springs.

Tidal streams: Strong tidal streams, which are reported to attain a rate of 5kts at springs, set in and out of Alur Pelayaran Benoa and the channel N of Pulau Serangan. Strong tide rips and eddies occur in Alur Pelayaran Benua. During the period of max declination (0-6°), the tidal stream appears to be semi diurnal turning approx 30 minutes after the times of semi diurnal HW and LW.

The flood streams E of the E wharf at Benoa sets strongly S and the ebb strongly N.

Approach

updated Aug 2013

Approach

Benoa is approached from Selat Badung and entered through Alur Pelayaran Benoa, the navigation channel leading from the strait into Teluk Benoa.

The outer bar, with depths of 7.9-11.0m over it, sand and stones, lies 0.6nm E of the entrance.

Fairway Lightbuoy (safewater) is moored 1nm E of Tanjung Benoa. The sea is reported to break heavily on the coastal reef 0.25nm NNW of the lightbuoy. The least depth in the fairway over the outer bar through the entrance between the reefs is 9.0m, the length of the fairway is 4,800m with a min width of 80m.

Directions for Alur Pelayaran Benoa: It is inadvisable to enter or leave Alur Pelayaran Benoa if the tidal stream exceeds 1kt owing to the difficulty in negotiating the sharp turn in the channel at No 1 Buoy. Vessels over 100m in length always have difficulty in negotiating this turn, even in a slight stream and should wait for slack water; the most favourable times are 1 hour before HW or 1 hour after LW.

Caution: When entering Benoa Channel great caution should be exercised as there are reefs on both sides of the channel; beacons and buoys should not be relied upon.

Port limits

Port Benoa is bounded on the seaward side by an arc of a circle, radius 2nm, centred on the flagstaff at the Harbour Master's (8°44.7'S 115°12.5E) office.
